For this series of Spotlight Interviews we’ll be introducing our Creative People in Florence/Florence Design Week Team! Creative People in Florence is working with a fantastic group of talented designers and artists to produce an exciting series of events for Florence Design Week (May 27-31).
Dorin Vasilescu is a portrait and editorial photographer based in Florence, and owner of Timmi Studio. Born in Romania, he lived the perfect childhood, in a village near the mountains, counting stars during late nights. He used to “take” portraits of his friends with an old camera (without having the film inside), go back into his “darkroom” and then give them a hand drawn “picture” on a piece of paper. Years later, he is still dreaming about flying among the stars, illustrated by a book with his own drawings, and he has dedicated a piece of his soul to photography .
His work has been published in various magazines and newspapers. Currently he is also filming a video documentary about the creation of a life size statue, by sculptor Frank Rekrut, honoring Harriet Tubman, that will be shown at the new Harriet Tubman Public School in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada
Dorin Vasilescu è un fotografo di ritratti e fotografia editoriale, che vive a Firenze, proprietario di Timmi Studio. Nato in Romania, ha vissuto l’ infanzia perfetta, in un villaggio vicino alle montagne, contando le stelle durante le notti. Aveva l’abitudine di “scattare” i ritratti dei suoi amici con una vecchia macchina fotografica (senza avere una pellicola dentro), di tornare nella sua “camera oscura”, e consegnare una “immagine” disegnata da lui su un pezzo di carta. Anni dopo, sta ancora sognando di volare tra le stelle, ha illustrato un libro con i suoi disegni, e ha dedicato alla fotografia un pezzo della sua anima.
Il suo lavoro è stato pubblicato su varie riviste e giornali. Attualmente sta lavorando anche su un video documentario, seguendo la creazione di una statua a grandezza naturale, opera dello scultore Frank Rekrut, onorando Harriet Tubman, che verrà mostrata alla nuova scufilmandoola Harriet Tubman Public School di St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada
How would you describe your relationship with Florence?
Florence is my family’s love at first sight. When we first visited Florence together, we felt at home here, so after a couple of years, we “packed” our cat, followed our feelings and came home. There’s something about this city that makes us happy. For those who have never tried it, I recommend taking a stroll in the center of Florence at night, when the narrow streets are empty. Florence is also the place where our daughter was born.
You do a lot of event photography as well as fashion photo shoots, do you ever have time to just take photos on your own? If so what is the subject matter that you enjoy shooting the most and why?
I am a portrait photographer, so everything that involves a person in front of my camera is what I enjoy doing the most. I’ve always dreamt that someday, someone will bring me an album documenting every day of my childhood. That is what I am trying to do through the event / family photography: to offer back a piece of an important moment in my clients’ lives…Fashion/commercial photography is something relatively new for me, but I have come to enjoy it, and it gives me the possibility to meet and work with some amazing people.
Which aspect of your work is more satisfying for you?
The first 10 seconds after I finish a project, when I realize that I am exactly where I want to be, and I am doing exactly what I want to do, making all the efforts and struggles along the way worth it.
How do you begin a project? Can you tell us about how one of your photo shoot takes shape?
I am trying to be selective when it comes to my projects and focus only on the ones I love the most. My personal projects are ideas that I have developed throughout the years. I try to give them the time they need in order to grow. They are pieces of me and I’m in no rush to finish them until the moment I believe they are perfect. As far as other projects are concerned, they involve hard team work, developing many creative ideas, scouting, planning every detail and organizing every step. The fun part comes at the end. And it lasts for only 10 seconds.
How important is collaborating with other artists and creative people? What do you look for in a potential creative collaborator?
Working with other artists and creative people offers you the chance to see things differently and it opens your eyes towards new perspectives. I am always looking for something new that challenges both me and my collaborator to get out of our comfort zone.
What can we expect from you for Design Week?
Given that I’m a last minute addition, I will try to do something fun, and enjoy being part of this event. We will install a mini studio take some headshots for one of my projects, which will be shown in an exhibition by the end of this year.
Are there any other plans or projects coming up that you want to share with the group?
As I was saying, by the end of this year I am planning a photo exhibit, my first one in Florence. I am also involved in two amazing video projects which I film and direct, a documentary and a short movie/commercial, both to be ready in the next few weeks.
You’ve been a very active member of Creative People in Florence for the past couple of years, how has the group influenced your work?
Through CPiF I’ve met many interesting people from all around the world. I think it’s a great platform to find some amazing creative minds and start doing things together. Most of them are in Florence for a limited time, but you can exchange some useful experiences, cultural aspects, points of view, which at certain point will have an influence on how you will approach things in the future.
Come descriveresti il tuo rapporto con Firenze?
Firenze è l’amore a prima vista della mia famiglia. Quando abbiamo visitato insieme Firenze per la prima volta, ci siamo sentiti a casa qui, quindi dopo un paio di anni, abbiamo “impacchettato” il nostro gatto, seguito i nostri sentimenti e siamo tornati a casa. C’è qualcosa in questa città che ci rende felici. Per coloro che non hanno mai provato, vi consiglio di fare una passeggiata nel centro di Firenze durante la notte, quando le strade strette sono vuote. Firenze è anche il luogo dove è nata la nostra figlia.
Fai tanti servizi fotografici per eventi e anche servizi fotografici di moda. Hai tempo da fare foto solo per te? Se sì, quale è l’oggetto che ti piace fotografare di più e perché ?
Sono un fotografo di ritratti, così tutto ciò che coinvolge una persona davanti alla mia macchina fotografica, è quello che mi piace fare di più. Ho sempre sognato che un giorno, qualcuno mi portera un album che documenta tutti i giorni della mia infanzia … Questo è quello che sto cercando di fare attraverso la fotografia dell’evento / famiglia: portare indietro un pezzo di un momento importante nella vita dei miei clienti … Fotografia di moda / fotografia commerciale è qualcosa di relativamente nuovo per me, che sono venuto a godere, e mi dà la possibilità di incontrare e lavorare con alcune persone straordinarie.
Qual’è l’aspetto del tuo lavoro che ti dà più soddisfazione?
I primi 10 secondi dopo aver finito un progetto, quando mi rendo conto che sono esattamente dove voglio essere, e sto facendo esattamente quello che voglio fare, e tutti gli sforzi hanno un senso.
Come inizi un nuovo progetto? Raccontaci un po’ della nascita di un servizio fotografico.
Sto cercando di essere selettivo quando si tratta di miei progetti e concentrarmi solo su quelli che amo di più. I miei progetti personali sono idee che ho sviluppato nel corso degli anni. Cerco di dare loro il tempo di cui hanno bisogno per crescere. Sono pezzi di me e non ho fretta di farli finire prima che siano perfetti. Per quanto riguarda gli altri progetti sono lavori di squadra, lo sviluppo di tante idee creative, scouting, pianificando ogni dettaglio e l’organizzazione di ogni passo. La parte divertente arriva alla fine. E dura solo 10 secondi.
Per te quant’è importante la collaborazione con altri creativi o artisti? Cosa cerchi in un potenziale collaboratore creativo?
Lavorare con altri artisti e creativi, ti offre la possibilità di vedere le cose in modo diverso e ti fa aprire gli occhi verso nuove prospettive. Sono sempre alla ricerca di qualcosa di nuovo che sfida sia me che il mio collaboratore di uscire dalla nostra zona di comfort.
Cosa ci dobbiamo aspettare da te per la settimana di Design Week?
Siccome sono un aggiunta all’ultimo minuto, cercherò di fare qualcosa di divertente, e godere di essere parte di questo evento. Faremo installare un mini studio e scattare alcuni headshots per un mio progetto, che sarà l’oggetto di una mostra fotografica, pianificata per la fine di questo anno.
Ci sono altri progetti o programmi per il futuro che vorresti condividere con il gruppo?
Come dicevo, entro la fine di quest’anno ho in programma una mostra fotografica, la prima volta a Firenze. Sono anche coinvolto in due progetti video sorprendenti in quale filmo e dirigo, un documentario e un cortometraggio / commerciale, che saranno pronte nelle prossime settimane.
