Spotlight: Olga Makarova

For this series of Spotlight Interviews we’ll be introducing our Creative People in Florence/Florence Design Week Team! Creative People in Florence is working with a fantastic group of talented designers and artists to produce an exciting series of events for Florence Design Week (May 27-31).

Olga Makarova is a Russian photographer based in Florence. Her focus is on portrait, fashion and wedding photography, and she has recently started to work with video. She became interested in photography about 10 years ago, but at that time it was just a hobby. After she studied photography in the Moscow School of Television, she started to spend more and more time working with the camera and with editing techniques. In 2009 she decided to start her career as a freelancer photographer and collaborated as a reportage photographer with the Agency Mainpeople shooting special events in Moscow. Two years ago she moved to Florence and to attend a Visual Communication course  at the Florence University of Art. In the near future she would like return to analog photography and work more with video.

Olga Makarova è un fotografa russa, che vive in Italia, a Firenze. Lavora principalmente con la fotografia di ritratto, moda e  matrimonio. Nell’ultimo periodo ha iniziato a lavorare anche con il video.  Ha iniziato ad interessarsi di fotografia circa 10 anni fa, ma in quel momento era solo un hobby. Dopo aver studiato fotografia presso la Scuola di Televisione e Media a Mosca, ha iniziato lavorare sempre più con la macchina fotografica e ad approfondire le tecniche di editing. Nel 2009 ha deciso di iniziare la sua carriera come fotografa professionista. Olga ha collaborato come fotografa di reportage per l’Agenzia Mainpeople fotografando gli eventi più esclusivi a Mosca. Due anni fa si è trasferita in Italia, a Firenze, e ha frequentato il corso di Comunicazione Visiva presso la Florence University of Art. Nel prossimo futuro Olga vuole tornare a fotografare con la fotocamera a pellicola e a lavorare sempre di più con il video.

How would you describe your relationship with Florence?
The first time I visited Florence was about 6 years ago and it was love at first sight. Sometimes I have difficulties and misunderstandings with Florence, but every time, when I come back, I feel at home.Which aspect of your work gives you the most satisfaction?
The best moment is when I see the end results;  for the commercial works, my biggest satisfaction is the feedback of the client.How do you see your commercial work in relation to your art work? Do they influence each other?
Art work helps me to create new ideas in commercial work and to experiment more. But my commercial works and art works have a different style.How important is collaboration with other artists and creative people?  What do you look for in a potential creative collaborator?
Collaborations with creative people give you chance to create together something incredible fresh and unique: it refreshes your mind, your ideas ideas, and it gives you new inspiration. It’s important that the collaboration will be with a positive, friendly person who is open and respects the ideas of the other.

What can we expect from you for Florence Design Week?
I’m looking forward to meeting interesting people in Florence and forming new creative collaborations!

Are there any other plans or projects coming up that you want to share with the group?

Come descriveresti il tuo rapporto con Firenze?La prima volta che ho visitato Firenze è stato circa 6 anni fa ed è stato amore a prima vista. A volte ho alcune difficoltà e incomprensioni con la città, ma ogni volta che ritorno qui mi sento a casa.Qual è l’aspetto del tuo lavoro che ti dà più soddisfazioni?
Il momento più bello è quando vedo il risultato finale; per i lavori commerciali, la mia più grande soddisfazione è il feedback finale del cliente.Come vedi l’aspetto commerciale in relazione al lavoro artistico?  Si influenzano?
L’opera d’arte mi aiuta a creare nuove idee per il lavoro commerciale e a sperimentare di più. Onestamente però i miei lavori commerciali e i miei lavori personali hanno uno stile diverso.Per te quant’è importante la collaborazione con altri creativi o artisti?  Cosa cerchi in un potenziale collaboratore creativo ?
Le collaborazioni con le persone creative danno la possibilità di creare insieme qualcosa di incredibilmente unico ed originale: in questa maniera si rinfresca la mente e le idee e si trovano nuove ispirazioni. Per me è importante che la collaborazione sia con una persona positiva ed amichevole la quale è aperta e pronta a rispettare le idee degli altri.

Cosa ci dobbiamo aspettare da te per la settimana di Design Week?
Non vedo l’ora di incontrare nuove persone interessanti a Firenze e creare interessanti collaborazioni!

Ci sono altri progetti o programmi per il futuro che vuoi condividere con il gruppo?
In questo momento sto lavorando su alcuni progetti, ma vorrei condividerli quando avrò una bozza quasi definitiva! 🙂
