Dutch artist Sonja de Graaf attended LABA Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. The broad gestural sweeps of color in her drawings celebrate youth, beauty, and energy. De Graaf’s interest in fairy tales and literature is revealed through references to Lolita and Little Red Riding Hood, for example. The persistent theme of innocence lost is expressed through de Graaf’s use of porn stars, supermodels and actresses as models for her work. Looking beyond their immediate facades of makeup, luxury clothes and fixed eroticism, Sonja de Graaf instead articulates their humanity, the heart of sensuality.
Artista olandese Sonja de Graaf ha frequentato LABA (Libera Accademia delle Belle Arti) a Firenze. Le grandi tracce di colore nei suoi disegni suggeriscono la giovinezza, la bellezza, e l’energia. Il suo interesse nelle favole e nella letteratura si rivela nelle allusioni, ad esempio a Lolita o Cappucetto Rosso. Il tema riccorrente dell’innocenza persa si esprime nella scelta delle sue modelle: le pornostar, le supermodelle, e le attrici. Guardando oltre la superficie del trucco, dei vestiti di lusso e del erotismo preconfezionato, de Graaf cerca invece la loro umanità, il cuore della loro sensualità.
How would you describe your relationship with Florence? I love Florence, it is a very homey city. For a contemporary artist it is not necessarily the best choice, but the quality of life is really good here and I have no intention on leaving.
You do gorgeous work with your wedding design company Funkybird. Tell us about how it all started (and where that name comes from!). My husband actually came up with the name. He was a DJ and made a mix which he called soul trees and funkybirds. It ended up being the name of my company and later on also for his (funkyBird Photography) I started working in a flower shop while studying at the Libera Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze and after several years decided to combine my love for flowers with my love for art. I really try to make every event unique and approach them as I would an art project.
How important is collaboration with other artists and creative people? What do you look for in a potential creative collaborator? I really believe in collaborations, contaminations. I am inspired by the works of others, i believe it makes one grow, as a person and as a creator.
What’s the key to balancing your work in the painting studio with your work in wedding design? The weddings are seasonal, starting in May and ending in October. This leaves me with a lot of time in the winter to work on my Paintings. Of course I also have some time in summer and I also think art is something that just needs to flow, even if it means not sleeping sometimes.
You’ve mentioned that your paintings are often inspired by literature. Tell us more about that…and maybe give us some clues about your show coming up at The Creative Collective. Like I said, I love collaborations so we are working on a special one for the opening. I love reading and writers who ‘paint’ with words like Virginia Woolf or Dostoyevsky. I immediately get inspired by that. Not necessarily the kind of painting I’ll be making, but definitely the mood I’m after.
Is there a creative skill or activity that you’ve always wanted to learn but never have? I tend to do what I want so when something interests me I will make sure I get into that. One thing on my bucket list is a degree in aesthetics.
Are there any other plans or projects coming up that you want to share with the group? I will open a new studio/working space this winter and this will open possibilities for courses in flower design so stay tuned!
Come descriveresti il tuo rapporto con Firenze? Adoro Firenze, è una città molto accogliente. Per un artista di arte contemporanea forse non è la scelta migliore, ma la qualità della vita è alta e non ho nessuna intenzione di andare via.
Il tuo lavoro come wedding designer per la tua azienda Funkybird è molto interessante. Raccontaci come hai iniziato—e da dove viene quel nome! Viene da un’idea di mio marito. Lui faceva il DJ e ha chiamato un suo mix ‘soul trees and funkybirds’ che finì per essere il nome della mia ditta come anche il suo (FunkyBird Photography) Ho iniziato a lavorare in un negozio di fiori quando studiavo alla Libera Accademia di Belle Arti e decisi di combinare il mio amore per i fiori e l’arte. Cerco di approcciare ogni evento come se fosse un progetto artistico e di renderlo unico.
Per te quant’è importante la collaborazione con altri creativi o artisti? Cosa cerchi in un potenziale collaboratore creativo? Io credo molto nelle collaborazioni, nelle contaminazioni. Il lavoro di altre persone mi ispira ed è così che si cresce, come persone, ma anche come creativi. Cerco persone oneste, aperte, entusiaste.
Qual è la tua strategia per trovare un’equilibrio fra il tuo lavoro di pittura e il tuo lavoro di wedding designer? I matrimoni sono una cosa stagionale, iniziando a Maggio e finendo ad Ottobre. Così ho molto tempo d’inverno per dipingere. Ovviamente ho un po’ di tempo anche d’estate. Credo anche che l’arte è una cosa che deve succedere, anche a costo di non dormire.
Hai accennato che spesso il tuoi quadri traggono ispirazione dalla letteratura. Ci potresti raccontare di più? Potresti anche darci qualche indizio sulla tua mostra il mese prossimo a The Creative Collective? Come già detto, credo molto nelle colaborazioni, stiamo lavorando a qualcosa di speciale per l’inaugurazione. Amo leggere e adoro scrittori che ‘dipingono’ con le parole come Virginia Woolf e Dostojevski. Mi ispirano immediatamente. Non necessariamente sull’oggetto del dipinto, ma senza dubbio sull’atmosfera che cerco di replicare.
C’è qualche tecnica o attività creativa che hai sempre voluto imparare? Tendo a fare ciò che voglio, quindi quando una cosa mi interessa la imparo. Un sogno nel cassetto è di laurearmi in filosofia estetica.
Ci sono altri progetti o programmi per il futuro che vorresti condividere con il gruppo? Aprirò un laboratorio/studio nuovo quest’inverno. Qui potrò tenere dei corsi di flower design.
