Spotlight: Erin Ciulla

How would you describe your relationship with Florence?

Florence gave me a base for my practice and the opportunity to do what I love doing. It gives me a creative outlet and keeps me continuously growing. Florence provides history and inspiration. It’s home.

Which aspect of your work gives you the most satisfaction?

Custom work and my collaborations. I love taking materials that are still in their raw form and giving them form, as well as working with local and international clients and artists to create a body of work.

How do you begin a project? Can you tell us about how a project takes shape?

I typically start with drawings or notes. I try to understand how the piece is supposed to look and what its purpose is at the end of creation. I try to let the materials speak for themselves … they guide me. If I am working on a custom piece for a client, I like to understand how they envision their project or piece. It allows me to better understand what could work, how to approach the job, and perhaps which ideas may work best to achieve their vision.

Are you an artist or an artisan?  What’s the difference? Does this question even matter anymore?

I don’t know if this question is important as it was in the past.  There is a difference between and artisan and and artist, at least I think so.  An artisan manually creates things, respecting the history of the place and of the object itself.  And artist has a wider scope, and may not even deal in tangible things, but more in ideas or performances.  It’s a debatable term…it’s not really black and white.

How important is collaboration with other artists and creative people?  What do you look for in a potential creative collaborator?

I look for openness and solid ideas. This makes it easier to create a sound piece together. I think that some of the best work can come from collaborations and from people that work in different disciplines. It is a great way to find an artistic outlet that can mix the talents and capabilities of the different artists and collaborators. One person’s weakness can be another’s strength.

What can we expect from you for Florence Design Week?

I’m working on a new project that stretches the boundaries of the vessel and the way of expressing the written word. This new dimension of my work represents a new form of expression for me.

Are there any other plans or projects coming up that you want to share with the group?

I’m always interested in experimentation with new materials and forms. I love taking materials that are perhaps not common in traditional bookbinding and making unique bespoke works that compliment the book structure.

Come descriveresti il tuo rapporto con Firenze?

Firenze mi dà l’opportunità di fare quello che mi piace fare. Mi fa vivere ogni giorno in modo creativo e mi fa crescere in continuazione. E’ una fonte inesauribile di storia e ispirazione. E’ casa mia.

Qual’è l’aspetto del tuo lavoro che ti dà più soddisfazione?

I lavori fatti su misura e le collaborazioni. Mi diverto a prendere i materiali ancora “crudi” e dar loro una forma, e poi mi piace collaborare con i clienti locali e internazionali per realizzare i loro ordini.

Come inizi un progetto? Raccontaci un po’ della nascita di un lavoro

Inizio di solito dagli schizzi e dagli appunti, cercando di capire come sarà il pezzo e quale sarà il suo uso finale. Di solito cerco di lasciare che i materiali parlino da soli.  Mi faccio guidare da loro. Se sto lavorando su un pezzo specifico per un cliente, provo a capire come loro possano immaginarsi il progetto.  Questo mi consente di intendere meglio da dove partire e come meglio realizzare la loro visione.

Sei artista o artigiana?  Qual’è per te la differenza? E’ ancora utile o rilevante questa domanda? 

Non so se questa domanda ha la stessa importanza di una volta. Tutti cercano sempre un titolo per ogni cosa.  C’è differenza fra un’artigiana e un’artista? Penso di sì. L’artigiano fa un prodotto tangibile, creato manualmente, segue la storia del luogo e dell’oggetto stesso. L’artista invece ha uno scopo più largo. Magari non fa qualcosa di concreto, ma potrebbe lavorare piuttosto con le idee o con le performances. E’ un termine discutibile…non è così chiaro come sembra.

Per te quant’è importante la collaborazione con altri creativi o artisti?  Cosa cerchi in un potenziale collaboratore creativo?

Cerco qualcuno aperto, con delle idee chiare, una persona che capisce il suo lavoro. Penso che i migliori lavori possono provenire da collaborazioni fra persone con diverse discipline. Collaborare è un ottimo modo per mescolare i talenti e le capacità dei diversi artisti e collaboratori. La debolezza di uno può essere la forza dell’altro.

Cosa ci dobbiamo aspettare da te per la settimana di Florence Design Week?

Lavoro su un nuovo progetto che parla del rapporto fra il contenitore e il modo di esprimere la parola scritta. E’ una nuova direzione.

Ci sono altri progetti o programmi per il futuro che vuoi condividere con il gruppo?

Sono sempre interessata a sperimentare nuovi materiali e forme. Cerco sempre materiali che forse non sono usati nella legatoria tradizionale ma che comunque possono arricchire la struttura del libro e renderlo un pezzo unico.
