Spotlight: Margherita de Martino Norante

How would you describe your relationship with Florence?
Florence is my home town. I grew up here and I really like it. It’s a small town, full of tour groups walking in lines with earphones on and looking at the ground, but lately there are also many young people starting new projects and making connections, and this is very stimulating. I’ve always had the luck of living in the center surrounded by its beauties, walking out every morning into a place like this makes you happier.Which aspect of your work gives you the most satisfaction? There are several: the creative freedom, the possibility to organize my time as I prefer, the chance to experiment different ideas and techniques ranging among many disciplines. How do you begin a piece? Tell us about how a piece takes shape.
I usually start from the urge of translating some idea in a wearable object. Sometimes it’s some ironic thought, sometimes feelings, or fears, or memories, or messages… Jewelry can have many functions and I’m interested in this versatility. I don’t draw, I start thinking the about  every detail of the object, then I make it using the final materials. This process can be fast or slow: every detail of the object (such as shape, weight, color, finish, materials, where the object is meant to be worn -neck, finger, on the clothes…) must have a valid reason. This translation from idea to real object can work on the first try, and in this case I like the fact that there will be a kind of tension in the piece coming from the uncertainty of the moment when you give shape to something for the first time. Other times the translation will need many steps, change of materials, experiments and sometimes it can end with a surprise, because sometimes the final piece is far away from my original idea. It also happens that an idea is just abandoned if I can’t find a way to express it coherently.

What is Officina NORA? What is your vision for the space?
Nora is my workshop and a place in which other people work making jewelry independently and following personal approaches. It’s a co-working space where each has his or her own freedom and can find, from the cohabitation, new ideas, experiences, feedback, and collaborations. The space is equipped for jewelry makers and offers the possibility to rent a working station for long and short periods, to give or take lessons and to show and sell work.

How important is collaboration with other artists and creative people? What do you look for in a potential creative collaborator?
My experience with collaborations is mostly in exchanging ideas and critiques on finished work or work-in-progress. I find it very useful to get feedback from both colleagues and people coming from other backgrounds. Sharing the workspace is a good way to avoid isolation and to remain curious and open. As for collaborations with artists coming from other fields, I don’t have much experience yet, but I think that new interesting new projects could come from CPiF!

What can we expect from you for Florence Design Week?
I hope that this kind of event can gather together the many artists and artisans working in Florence. Often in small towns the protective and diffident spirit is still strong, but events like Florence Design Week can give exposure to independent artists and makers among the resident and tourist public. Officine NORA will feature works by the artists currently working here: Arata Fuchi, Valentina Caprini, Martina Lončar e Margherita de Martino Norante. Some limited edition pieces will be made on the theme Creative Cities and the Souvenir, and during the opening event there will be a little souvenir for every visitor.

Are there any other plans or projects coming up that you want to share with the group? For the future we now have many projects and few details, but if someone is interested in collaborations for Florence Design Week or for other projects, they’re more than welcome!

Come descriveresti il tuo rapporto con Firenze?
Firenze è la mia città natale, ci sono cresciuta e ci sto bene. E’ piccola, provinciale e piena di turisti che camminano in lunghe file guardando per terra e con le cuffie nelle orecchie, ma ultimamente ci sono anche tanti ragazzi che si mettono a fare cose nuove e fanno rete e trovo che questo sia molto stimolante. Sono molto fortunata perché ho sempre avuto la possibilità di vivere in centro e di apprezzarne le bellezze quotidianamente: camminare la mattina per posti così belli è qualcosa che ti riconcilia con il mondo.

Qual’e l’aspetto del tuo lavoro che ti dà più soddisfazione?
Non saprei sceglierne uno solo: la libertà creativa, quella di organizzare il mio tempo come preferisco e la possibilità di sperimentare tecniche e idee spaziando fra diverse discipline.

Come inizi un nuovo progetto? Raccontaci un po’ della nascita di un lavoro artistico.
Di solito comincia con l’idea di tradurre uno spunto in un oggetto che si possa indossare. A volte sono idee ironiche, altre volte sentimenti che provo o paure o ricordi o messaggi… I gioielli possono avere molte funzioni, e mi piace molto lavorare su questa versatilità. Non disegno, comincio a pensare l’oggetto in ogni suo dettaglio e poi passo direttamente a realizzarlo usando i materiali che ritengo più adatti. Il processo può essere veloce, o richiedere tanto tempo: devo in qualche modo riuscire a giustificare a me stessa ogni dettaglio dell’oggetto che sto realizzando (la forma, il peso, il colore, la finitura, i materiali, dove questo oggetto sarà indossato-quindi al collo, al dito, sui vestiti…) Questa traduzione dall’idea all’oggetto reale può funzionare al primo tentativo, e in questo caso la cosa che mi piace è che nel pezzo finito ci sarà una certa tensione, che viene dall’incertezza del momento in cui dai forma a un’idea per la prima volta. Oppure la traduzione avrà bisogno di più passaggi di “rifinitura”, quindi possono esserci cambi di materiale, tentativi, esperimenti e grandi sorprese, perché magari il risultato finale è completamente diverso dall’idea di partenza, ma comunque funziona e mi soddisfa. A volte succede anche che l’idea viene abbandonata perché non sono riuscita a realizzare qualcosa di coerente con quello che volevo esprimere.

Che cos’è Officina Nora? Qual’è la tua visione per lo spazio?
Nora è il mio laboratorio. Ma è anche un posto in cui lavorano altre persone che fanno gioielli, ciascuna indipendentemente e in modo diverso. è uno spazio condiviso in cui ciascuno ha la sua libertà e indipendenza ma può anche trovare, dalla convivenza con gli altri, scambio di idee, di esperienze, nuovi stimoli e collaborazioni. Lo spazio è attrezzato come una bottega in co-working, c’è la possibilità di affittare una postazione per brevi o lunghi periodi, di tenere o prendere lezioni e di mostrare e vendere i propri lavori.

Per te quant’è importante la collaborazione con altri creativi o artisti? Cosa cerchi in un potenziale collaboratore creativo?
La mia esperienza di collaborazione è per ora legata soprattutto allo scambio di idee su pezzi in lavorazione o finiti. Trovo molto utile sottoporre il proprio lavoro sia a persone estranee al mio campo di lavoro sia a colleghi. Penso che lavorare condividendo lo spazio con altre persone sia un ottimo modo per non isolarsi, stimolare la ricerca e la curiosità e rimanere aperti alla critica e al confronto.Per quanto riguarda collaborazioni con artisti provenienti da discipline diverse non ho ancora esperienze, ma credo che da CPiF possano venire fuori progetti ed esperienze nuove! è sicuramente molto importante e interessante allargare il proprio pubblico e mettersi in gioco su campi nuovi.

Cosa ci aspetta per la settimana di Florence Design Week?
Spero che per occasioni come questa i tanti artisti e creativi che lavorano a Firenze riescano ad organizzarsi insieme per far sentire la propria voce. Molto spesso c’è diffidenza e uno spirito troppo protettivo e poco aperto alle novità che fa sì che ciascuno rimanga nel suo piccolo giardino con i cancelli ben chiusi. Le manifestazioni come Florence Design Week possono dare visibilità, sia fra i residenti che fra i turisti, alle tante piccole realtà ed eccellenze presenti sul nostro territorio. Officine NORA presenterà i lavori degli artisti attualmente presenti: Arata Fuchi, Valentina Caprini, Martina Lončar e Margherita de Martino Norante. Alcune collezioni saranno realizzate appositamente sul tema Creative Cities / Souvenir e durante la serata di inaugurazione ci sarà un piccolo souvenir per tutti i visitatori.

Ci sono altri progetti o programmi per il futuro che vuoi condividere con il gruppo?
Per il futuro per ora abbiamo tante idee ma pochi dettagli, ma se qualcuno fosse interessato a collaborazioni o interazioni, sia per Design Week che per altri progetti, è più che benvenuto!
