How would you describe your relationship with Florence?
I’ve been living in Florence for three years to attend LABA (Libera Accademia di Belle Arti). I cannot say if this city influences my photography or not, but I can definitely say that my projects and ideas are born and thrive in Florence. Looking at the pictures I take, a viewer probably wouldn’t say that they are related to the town, or even less to the Renaissance, but I think Florence is now a modern city and it is ready for contemporary artists.
Which aspect of your work gives you the most satisfaction?
The greatest satisfaction for me on an artistic level is when my work is appreciated by people whose judgment I think is important, especially in the international field. My photographs are sometimes criticized because they are unconventional in terms of rules of classical photography, so it’s satisfying when someone appreciates my originality. Another satisfying aspect of my work is to see a project completed and well developed, to follow a piece from birth of the idea to the final print or to the production of a book.
How do you begin a piece? Tell us about how a piece takes shape.
My projects all start from random ideas that emerge mainly during the night or when I am lost in thought, with time and the right focus they then become photographic projects. But the real engine of ideas are the experiences that I have during the day, the people I meet, the books I read, the images that surround me.
You’re still a student, but you already work quite often as a photographer. How do you see your commercial work in relation to your art work? Do they influence each other?
For sure it is the artwork which influences the commercial aspect, although that’s not always possible. For every job I always try to make creative images, but sometimes I exaggerate and not all customers are happy to accept them. If I could live off of my art, I would be able to avoid certain commercial standards, but c‘est la vie!
How important is collaboration with other artists and creative people? What do you look for in a potential creative collaborator?
For the moment I have not yet developed any projects in collaboration with other artists, but I find the idea very interesting. I would love to collaborate with artists from other creative fields but with tastes similar to mine, so as to create a unique work across several media. On the other hand, I almost always avoid working with other photographers.
What can we expect from you for Design Week?
Good question! I would prefer not to give too much away–I love the element of surprise! I will be working on self-portraits but in line with the theme of Design Week.
Are there any other plans or projects coming up that you want to share with the group?
A big project for the future is the creation of a magazine – in collaboration with a designer – composed solely of images, which addresses topics ranging from art to fashion to contemporary culture in general with an ironic twist.
Abito a Firenze da tre anni per frequentare la Libera Accademia di Belle Arti. Non saprei dire se questa città influenza la mia fotografia o meno, ma posso sicuramente dire che nell’ambiente fiorentino i miei progetti e le mie idee nascono e prosperano. Probabilmente guardando le immagini che creo non vi è nulla di spiccatamente legato alla città, o tantomeno di rinascimentale, ma credo che Firenze sia ormai una città moderna e pronta a far fiorire artisti contemporanei.
Qual’è l’aspetto del tuo lavoro che ti dà più soddisfazioni?
La più grande soddisfazione per me a livello artistico è quando il mio lavoro viene apprezzato da persone il cui giudizio ritengo importante, sopratutto a livello internazionale. A volte le mie fotografie vengono criticate perché fuori dagli schemi comuni della fotografia classica, quindi quando qualcuno apprezza la mia originalità posso ritenermi soddisfatta. Un altro aspetto che apprezzo del mio lavoro è vedere un progetto concluso e ben sviluppato, vedere la nascita di un’idea fino alla stampa finale o alla produzione di un libro.
Come inizi un nuovo progetto? Raccontaci un po’ della nascita di un lavoro artistico.
I miei progetti partono tutti da idee casuali che principalmente spuntano durante la notte o quando sono sovrappensiero, con il tempo e la giusta voglia diventano poi progetti fotografici. Ma il vero motore di idee sono le esperienze che faccio durante il giorno, le persone che incontro, i libri che leggo, le immagini che mi circondano.
Sei ancora studente, ma già lavori spesso come fotografa. Come vedi l’aspetto commerciale in relazione al lavoro artistico? Si influenzano?
Sicuramente è il lavoro artistico che influenza l’aspetto commerciale, anche se non è sempre possibile. Per ogni lavoro cerco sempre di realizzare delle immagini creative e originali, a volte esagero e non tutti i committenti sono propensi ad accettare. Se potessi vivere di arte farei a meno di prestare attenzione a determinati canoni commerciali. C’est la vie!
Per te quant’è importante la collaborazione con altri creativi o artisti? Cosa cerchi in un potenziale collaboratore creativo ?
Per il momento non ho ancora sviluppato nessun progetto in collaborazione con altri artisti, ma lo trovo molto interessante. Mi piacerebbe collaborare con artisti provenienti da altri ambiti creativi ma con un gusto estetico simile al mio, in modo da creare quasi un lavoro unico attraverso più mezzi. Al contrario evito quasi sempre di collaborare con altri fotografi.
Cosa ci aspettiamo da te per la settimana di Design Week?
Bella domanda! Preferisco non anticipare grandi cose, adoro l’effetto sorpresa! Comunque lavorerò sull’autoritratto ma in tema con la Design week.
Ci sono altri progetti o programmi per il futuro che vuoi condividere con il gruppo?
Un grande progetto per il futuro è la creazione di un magazine – in collaborazione con una designer – fatto solo di immagini, che tratti temi che vanno dall’arte alla moda alla più generale cultura contemporanea in chiave ironica.
