Please join us for the final exhibition of Oltrarno Gaze 2022, the culmination of this year’s program, which celebrates the arts, crafts and history of the Oltrarno neighborhood through the works of female artists and artisans of the past and present.
We were honored to curate several events during the program, including a handmade paper workshop with Gigetta Floral Designs and a virtual studio visit featuring artisans Joy Franklin, Kirstie Mathieson and Erin Ciulla. At the opening of the final exhibition, which will bring together works and projects from several participating organizations, we will present the project International Artisans Answer. For this project, five female artisans of the Oltrarno and beyond responded to a historical artwork by a female artist (all of which have been restored thanks to support by Advancing Women Artists), creating a new piece in their respective mediums. The participating artisans are potter Kirstie Mathieson, bookbinder Erin Ciulla, leather artisan Stephanie Lehmann, and goldsmiths Joy Franklin and Margherita de Martino Norante. The exhibition will also include a short documentary video by Olga Makarova which traces the development of each piece over the past few months.
Oltrarno Gaze is made possible through partnerships between the British Institute, Villa Il Palmerino and many other cultural players in Florence, with funding from the AWA Legacy Fund.
