Meet Francesco Ciai, author and director of the Claudio Ciai Foundation. Come by Merry & Bright for reading from his new children’s book, “Paco & Camelia” in both English and Italian.

Three adjectives (or more) to describe your work:
Florentine DOC. Whimsical. Inspirational.
What makes Florence the right place for what you do?
As a born and bred Florentine, I have always been passionate about my city, its history and all of the remarkable things it offers. And so, when writing my first book for kids titled “Paco & Camelia: The Venus’ Mystery and Other Secrets,” I naturally had to make the city itself the protagonist.
I also founded and run the Claudio Ciai Foundation in honor of my father (www.FondazioneClaudioCiai.com). The organization aims to assist with the ongoing support and recuperation of road accident victims suffering brain injuries or permanent disabilities, particularly in Florence and Tuscany.
At CPiF we celebrate collaboration between creatives. Are you working on any collaborative projects at the moment, or are you looking for people to work with in the future?
Currently, I am working on writing the sequel to Paco & Camelia and am looking to collaborate with a graphic designer to help recreate the style of the first book. I also work closely with Erika Marchetti who is my editor, and Daniel Hernandez Lyon who translated the first Paco & Camelia book and helps with all marketing.
Who are your favorite local artists, artisans, or creatives that everyone should know about?
Daniel has always helped me with marketing and communications and has been a great help putting my projects out there (his portfolio can be viewed at www.hernandez-lyon.com). Erika, is also a magical editor.
Aside from my collaborators, I particularly love The Florence Art Academy and all their work. The remarkable organization was co-founded by an American expat Susan Tintori.
I also love Jessica Russo Scherr’s work who, while living in Florence, volunteered for an artistic initiative for my Foundation and created a gorgeous collage portrait of my father that I cherish very much and eventually became the cover of another book I wrote, “La Strada della Dignità: Il Movimento #CiaiCoraggio”. This book tells the story of what happened to my father and my family following a tragic car accident and is acclaimed for being the first manual in Italy’s history that easily outlines the steps families need to take when a loved one remains severely injured and disabled after an accident.
Any holiday gift you’re particularly pining after this year?
I’d love to find some beautiful decorative items to take with me to my friends and family in Miami over the holidays!

Quali sono tre (o anche più di tre) aggettivi che descrivono il tuo lavoro?
Fiorentino DOC, magico e ispiratore
Perché Firenze è la città giusta per il tuo lavoro?
Come fiorentino di nascita, sono sempre stato appassionato della mia città, della sua storia e di tutte le cose straordinarie che offre. E così, quando ho scritto il mio primo libro per bambini intitolato “Paco & Camelia: Il mistero di Venere e altri segreti”, ho voluto naturalmente rendere la città stessa protagonista.
Ho anche fondato la Fondazione Claudio Ciai in onore di mio padre (www.FondazioneClaudioCiai.com) e ne sono il Presidente. L’organizzazione si propone di assistere con il sostegno continuo le vittime di incidenti stradali che hanno acquisito disabilità permanenti, in particolare a Firenze e in Toscana.
A CPiF celebriamo la collaborazione fra creativi. In questo momento state preparando qualche progetto in collaborazione con altri designer, artigiani o creativi, o stai cercando collaboratori per progetti futuri?
Attualmente sto lavorando alla stesura del sequel di Paco & Camelia e sto cercando di collaborare con un illustratore per ricreare lo stile del primo libro. Lavoro sempre a stretto contatto con Erika Marchetti, che è la mia editor, e Daniel Hernandez Lyon, che ha tradotto il primo libro Paco & Camelia e mi aiuta per quanto riguarda il marketing.
Chi sono i vostri artisti, artigiani o creativi preferiti a Firenze che tutti dovrebbero conoscere?
Daniel mi ha sempre aiutato con il marketing e le comunicazioni ed è stato di grande aiuto nel lanciare tutti i miei progetti (il suo portfolio: www.hernandez-lyon.com). Erika invece è semplicemente la migliore editor che io abbia mai conosciuto!
Oltre ai miei collaboratori, amo particolarmente la Florence Art Academy e il lavoro fantastico che svolgono. La straordinaria organizzazione è stata co-fondata da un’americana che vive a Firenze, Susan Tintori.
Adoro anche le opere di Jessica Russo Scherr che, mentre viveva a Firenze, si è offerta volontaria per un’iniziativa artistica per la mia Fondazione e ha creato uno splendido ritratto in collage di mio padre che è stato apprezzato da tutti moltissimo e che alla fine è diventato la copertina di un altro libro, “La Strada della Dignità: Il Movimento #CiaiCoraggio “. Questo libro racconta la storia di quello che è successo a mio padre e alla mia famiglia a seguito del suo tragico incidente automobilistico ed è acclamato per essere il primo manuale nella storia italiana perché delinea facilmente i passi necessari che le famiglie devono seguire quando una persona cara rimane gravemente ferita e disabile dopo un incidente.
C’è qualche regalo in particolare che sperate di trovare sotto l’albero quest’anno?
Mi piacerebbe trovare dei bellissimi oggetti decorativi da portare con me ai miei amici e alla mia famiglia a Miami durante le vacanze!
