Spotlight: Jessica Russo Scherr

Up next in the spotlight is artist Jessica Russo Scherr, an artist who actively exhibits internationally. Her artwork is about personal experiences and the relationship between people, environment and objects. She uses nature, architecture, the human body, a portrait or a representation of herself, to give form to psychological states or emotional experiences. These images often focus on duality, protection, personal evolution, development, healing and growth and how it relates to different stages of life, memory and reflection. These stages are depicted in social and spiritual situations. For this reason she has given the title ‘Layers’ to her latest body of work that she will be showing at the Creative Collective opening this Thursday evening. We asked Jessica a few questions about her artwork, her process and how she balances it all. How would you describe your relationship with Florence?
My relationship with Florence has changed over the years from a tourist to a resident. Once I moved here I was able to get to know Florence at a much slower pace, exploring smaller museums, churches and wandering small streets with my husband. Now, as a working mother of two girls I am much more embedded in the community. I still spend time in museums but now I look forward to long bike rides along the Arno to recharge my creative energy.

Which aspect of your work gives you the most satisfaction?
I gain the most satisfaction from working out the challenges of a piece, getting the work to transcend paint or paper. For example, when I am creating a portrait and the images goes from being lines and color to being the essence of the person.

How did you become interested in painting?
I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t interested in painting. Some of my earliest memories are of me sitting in a corner at my grandparent’s house making art.

How do you begin a project? Can you tell us about how a project takes shape? How do you choose your subjects?
My work ethic is very cyclical. I go through times where I sketch constantly, look at art from all genres for both techniques and concepts. Then I go through a ravenous art making period. I typically work on 3 or 4 artworks at the same time.

If the artwork is a self-portrait then it typically revolves around current life experiences. Most of the time people, frequently students of mine, ask if they can be the subject of one of my works. Generally, I let my relationship with the subject dictate the mood and emotion. It is a very personal process for me and one that is difficult to translate into words. I guess that is why I make them into artworks.

Aside from being an artist, you are also a teacher, and you’re a mom… Is it difficult to make your art work a priority?
The balance is challenging! Both of my girls (ages 5 and 2) love making art. I try to work with them in my studio as much as possible. However, the 5 year old gets upset if I don’t follow her implicit instructions on how to create whatever I am working on and the 2 year old just likes to steal my paint brush and run around the room.
As for teaching, my philosophy is to model and demonstrate that way students can really understand the process and the challenges of each artwork. Sometimes those demonstrations can lead into the creation of an artwork.

How important is collaboration with other artists and creative people? What do you look for in a potential creative collaborator?
I teach art and therefore I spend all day speaking about art with people that are interested in art. It is a great way for me to refill my creative energy. Positivity and open mindedness are key traits for any creative collaboration.

Are there any other plans or projects coming up that you want to share with the group?
I am part of a show “Segnali d’Amore” that was created by three Florentine non profit organizations. L’Associazione Gabriele Borgogni, la Fondazione Claudio Ciai e l’Associazione Lorenzo Guarnieri which are working together on this project to create an artistic initiative as fundraising and thus help road accident victims and their families. I created collages of 3 victims that will be on display and up for auction. Segnali d’Amore” 21-22 Novembre at the Tepidarium del Roster ((Giardino dell’Orticultura)) The opening will be on the 21st of November at 6pm.

I am also working on a public art proposal for the Palazzo di Giustizia in Florence. I am competing for an opportunity to create a large public art piece. Just keep your fingers crossed!

La prossima artista nello spotlight è Jessica Russo Scherr, un artista che espone a livello internazionale. La sua opera è di esperienze personali e il rapporto tra le persone, l’ambiente e gli oggetti. Lei usa la natura, l’architettura, il corpo umano, un ritratto o di una rappresentazione di se stessa, per dare forma a stati psicologici o esperienze emotive. Queste immagini spesso si concentrano sulla dualità, la protezione, l’evoluzione personale, lo sviluppo, la guarigione e la crescita e come si riferisce alle diverse fasi della vita, la memoria e la riflessione. Queste fasi sono raffigurati in situazioni sociali e spirituali. Per questo motivo ha dato il titolo ‘Layers’ al suo ultimo corpo di lavoro che sarà in mostra in apertura Collettivo Creativo questo Giovedi sera. Abbiamo chiesto Jessica qualche domanda sulle sue opere d’arte, il suo processo e come lei saldi tutto. Come descriveresti il tuo rapporto con Firenze?
Il mio rapporto con Firenze è cambiato nel corso degli anni da turista a residente. Una volta mi sono trasferita qui ho avuto modo di conoscere Firenze a un ritmo molto più lento, visitare musei più piccoli, chiese e vagando stradine con mio marito. Ora, come una mamma di due bimbe che lavora sono molto più incorporata nella comunità. Ho ancora tempo da trascorrere nei musei, ma ora non vedo l’ora di fare lunghe pedalate in bicicletta lungo l’Arno per ricaricare la mia energia creativa.

Qual’è l’aspetto del tuo lavoro che ti dà più soddisfazione?
Mi da più soddisfazione il risolvere le sfide di un pezzo, ottenere il lavoro di trascendere vernice o carta. Per esempio, quando sto creando un ritratto e le immagini passano dall’essere linee e colore ad essere l’essenza della persona.

Com’è nata il tuo interesse nella pittura?
Non riesco a ricordare un tempo in cui non ero interessata alla pittura. Alcuni dei miei primi ricordi sono di me seduta in un angolo a casa dei nonni a fare arte.

Come inizi un progetto? Racconti un po’ della nascita di un lavoro? Come scegli i soggetti?
La mia etica di lavoro è molto ciclica. Vado a piu riprese facendo schizzi costantemente, guardo l’arte di tutti i generi per entrambe le tecniche e concetti, dopo attraverso un periodo a fare arte vorace, normalmente lavoro su 3 o 4 opere contemporaneamente. Se l’opera è un autoritratto, allora gira in genere circa le esperienze di vita correnti. La maggior parte delle volte le persone, spesso miei studenti , chiedono se possono essere oggetto di uno dei miei lavori. In generale, ho lasciato il mio rapporto con il soggetto a dettare l’umore e le emozioni. È un processo molto personale per me difficile da tradurre in parole. Immagino che questo sia il motivo per cui li faccio in opere d’arte.

Oltre a fare le pitture fai anche insegnante, e sei anche mamma… E’ difficile mantenere come prioirità il tuo lavoro artistico?
E ‘una sfida! Le mie bimbe (età 5 e 2) Amano fare arte. Io lavoro con loro nel mio studio, per quanto possibile. Tuttavia, la bambina di 5 anni si arrabbia se non seguo le sue istruzioni specifiche su come creare qualcosa e la bambina di 2 anni piace solo rubare il mio pennello e correre per la stanza.

Per quanto riguarda l’insegnamento, la mia filosofia è quella di modellare e dimostrare in che modo gli studenti possono davvero comprendere il processo e le sfide di ogni opera d’arte. A volte queste manifestazioni possono portare nella creazione di un’opera d’arte.

Per te quant’è importante la collaborazione con altri creativi o artisti? Cosa cerchi in un potenziale collaboratore creativo?
Io insegno l’arte e quindi trascorro tutto il giorno a parlare d’arte con le persone che sono interessati all’arte. E ‘un ottimo modo per me per riempire la mia energia creativa. Positività e apertura mentale sono caratteristiche fondamentali per qualsiasi collaborazione creativa.

Ci sono altri progetti o programmi per il futuro che vuoi condividere con il gruppo?
Io faccio parte di una mostra che tre associazioni ONLUS Florentine lanciano il progetto“SEGNALI D’AMORE”

L’Associazione Gabriele Borgogni, la Fondazione Claudio Ciai e l’Associazione Lorenzo Guarnieri hanno deciso di lavorare insieme al progetto “Segnali d’Amore” per creare un’iniziativa artistica come raccolta fondi e aiutare così le vittime della strada e le loro famiglie. Ho creato collage di 3 vittime che saranno in esposizione e all’asta.

L’evento avrà luogo il 21-22 Novembre 2015 a Firenze al Tepidarium Del Roster (Giardino dell’Orticultura). (Inaugurazione: 21 Novembre alle 18.00).

Sto anche lavorando su una proposta di arte pubblica per il Palazzo di Giustizia di Firenze. Sto in competizione per l’opportunità di creare un grosso pezzo di arte pubblica. Basta tenere le dita incrociate!
